
Why your skin gets dry in summer — and why drinking more water won't fix it

You have heard the advice for years. Skin feels dry, so drink more water. In summer the advice only gets louder.
Here is the part no one tells you: for the skin you actually see and touch, water is rarely the bottleneck. The problem starts one layer down, where your cells do the work of holding moisture in place. When heat asks more of those cells than usual, the moisture they would normally hold simply leaves.
So the real question for summer is not am I drinking enough. It is can my skin still hold what it has.
The "drink more water" myth, briefly
Hydration from the inside matters for your whole body. It does very little for the outermost layer of your skin.
Dermatologists are direct about this. As one puts it, the idea that six to eight glasses a day hydrates the surface of your skin is "one of the biggest myths in all of dermatology." A review in Clinics in Dermatology found no evidence that drinking more water improves skin in well-hydrated people.
Water you drink supports your blood volume and your organs. It does not travel in a straight line to the cells on the surface, where dryness actually shows. That layer keeps its moisture a different way.
How your skin actually holds water
Your outer layer, the stratum corneum, holds water with two things its own cells make:
- Lipids — a matrix of ceramides and fatty acids that acts like mortar between cells, sealing moisture in.
- Natural moisturizing factor (NMF) — a set of water-binding compounds, including amino acids and urea, that pulls and keeps water inside the layer.
When that system is intact, skin stays supple. Research puts the working range at roughly 10 to 20 percent water; below 10 percent, skin turns brittle. The lipids and the NMF are what keep you on the right side of that line. Both depend on cells that are doing their job.
What heat does to your skin's water budget
Now add a Canadian summer.
Warm weather raises the temperature of your skin, and water loss rises with it. The measure for this is transepidermal water loss — the water that escapes through the surface into the air. Researchers found that an increase of about 7 to 8°C in skin temperature roughly doubles the rate of that loss in normal skin.

Heat, sun, air conditioning, and chlorine all pull in the same direction. They do not empty a reservoir you can refill with a glass of water. They speed up the rate at which your skin lets moisture go. Drinking more does not change that rate. The work happens at the surface, and it depends on energy.
Heat isn't a moisture problem. It's an energy problem.
Everything your skin does to hold water — building lipids, maintaining the barrier, keeping NMF in place — runs on cellular energy. As skin ages, that energy declines, and so does everything that leans on it. Heat then asks for more of it, right when there is less to give.
