Guide - Barrier repair
If your skin suddenly stings when you apply products it used to tolerate, looks red or flaky, and feels tight no matter how much you moisturise, you have probably damaged your skin barrier. It is one of the most common things that happens when a routine gets too enthusiastic with acids, retinoids and scrubs. The good news: it almost always heals. Here is how to help it.
What the barrier is, in plain terms
Your skin barrier is the top layer that keeps water in and irritants out. Over-exfoliating strips it, so water escapes (that tight, dry feeling) and everything you apply suddenly stings. The fix is not another active. The fix is to stop stripping it and give it what it needs to rebuild.
The signs you are dealing with barrier damage
- Stinging or burning from products that used to be fine.
- New redness or blotchiness.
- Tightness right after cleansing.
- Flaking next to oily patches.
- Breakouts that are not quite normal spots.
If several of these showed up after you added or increased actives, that is your answer.
What actually helps
Stop all actives now. No acids, no retinol, no vitamin C, no scrubs. This is the step people skip and it is the most important one. You cannot repair a barrier while you are still stripping it.
Go simple and gentle. For one to two weeks, use only a gentle cleanser, a barrier-supporting moisturiser, and sunscreen. That is the whole routine. Boring is the point.
Support with the right ingredients. Look for hydration and barrier-friendly ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides. PhytoSpherix, the ingredient our formulas are built around, is shown to hydrate and strengthen skin, which is exactly what a stripped barrier needs.
Protect it. Sunscreen every morning. Damaged skin is more vulnerable, and UV slows healing.
What to skip
Do not "push through" with your actives hoping skin will adjust. It will not. Do not layer ten hydrating products hoping more is better, a stripped barrier gets overwhelmed easily. And do not reintroduce actives until the stinging is fully gone, usually two to four weeks.
A simple repair routine
Morning: gentle cleanser or just water, barrier moisturiser, sunscreen. Night: gentle cleanser, barrier moisturiser. Once the stinging is gone and skin feels normal for about a week, reintroduce one active at a time, a couple of times a week, and build slowly.
Where Veriphy fits
Our whole line is formulated for sensitive and reactive skin, which is what your skin becomes when the barrier is down. The Self Absorbed Moisturizer (PhytoSpherix, hyaluronic acid) and the gentle Hit or Mist Toner are a calm, simple base to heal on. When you are ready to reintroduce exfoliation, the Power Trip Serum uses lactic acid and is designed to start slow, a few times a week, so you do not end up back here. Everything is backed by our 30-day promise.
